Brussels port
The port of Brussels is an inland port in Brussels , the capital of Belgium . The port is over the channel Zeekanaal Brussel-Schelde (dt. Sea channel Brussels- Schelde ) with the Schelde and thus to the port of Antwerp and the North Sea connected. About the Canal Charleroi-Bruxelles (dt channel. Charleroi -Brussels), it is also with the Wallonie connected. 7.5 million tonnes (2005) of building materials (49%), fuels (30%) and agricultural products (14%) are handled in the port. 52% of the transshipment takes place with the Netherlands, 28% with Belgium and 13% with Germany. The port is accessible to ships up to 4,500 tons and barges up to 9,000 tons. The port extends over an area of 64 ha.
history
The port of Brussels was created on June 1, 1993 from the predecessor organization NV Zeekanaal after Belgium transferred authority over the ports to the regions . This new independence created a new dynamic and increasing results. Between 1974 and 1993, the throughput fell from 14.4 million tons to less than a third. From 1993 to 2004 the throughput increased again by 60%.
