Paul van Zeeland
Paul Guillaume van Zeeland (born November 11, 1893 in Soignies , † September 22, 1973 in Brussels ) was a Belgian politician . At first he belonged to the Catholic State Party, and since 1945 to the Christian People's Party. From March 25, 1935 to November 24, 1937 he was Prime Minister, from 1935 to 1936 also Foreign Minister under King Leopold III. (Belgium) . In 1941 he was employed by the Belgian government- in- exile in London under Prime Minister Hubert Pierlot, chairman of the Belgian commission for post-war issues and in 1944 of the commission for repatriation. From 1949 to 1954 he was again Belgian Foreign Minister.
Van Zeeland worked with Louis de Brouckère on a concept for a Western European economic and monetary union, which contributed significantly to the establishment of the customs union of the Benelux countries on September 5, 1944.
In 1952 he was accepted as an external member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
