Gaston Eyskens

Eyskens was an economist, since 1931 professor at the Catholic University of Leuven and since 1939 for the Belgian Christian Socials in parliament. He was finance minister several times (1945, 1947–1949 and 1965–1966) and 1947–1949 head of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). In the years 1949–1950, 1958–1961 and 1968–1973 he was Prime Minister of Belgium, where he dealt in particular with the conflicts between Flemings and Walloons and with the dispute over the former King Leopold III. and the Congo question to deal with. He was instrumental in the constitutional reform of 1970, which initiated the regionalization of Belgium. Gaston Eyskens was the father of Mark Eyskens , who was also Prime Minister of Belgium.
