The culture and congress center Gera ( kuk ; formerly Haus der Kultur or HdK ) is an event and conference building in the city center of Gera . It was created from 1977 in the course of the further development of the “ socialist city center ” and was handed over to its destination on October 2, 1981 in the presence of Kurt Hager . It has a multi-purpose hall with 1700 seats and several restaurants; a bowling alley was demolished around the turn of the millennium. A special feature is the 450 m² “Song of Life” relief wall in the foyer, which was designed by 24 GDR sculptors under the direction of Jo Jastram .

During the GDR era, the then House of Culture broadcast, among other things, several editions of the annual Christmas television show Between Breakfast and Roast Goose . Today the culture and congress center serves as a venue for concerts (mainly from the fields of hits and folk music, but also younger artists such as Annett Louisan or Ich + Ich ); Performances by comedians, magicians, etc.; Public fairs (car exhibition “Autofrühling”; travel fair) or political events (such as the PDS Federal Party Congress 2002; see Geraer Dialog ).

modernization

Foyer 2 after modernization ( light rain ; December 2007)

In 2006 the city of Gera decided to renovate the Gera Culture and Congress Center step by step with small investments in order to maintain the attractiveness of the venue.

The most extensive modernization was the replacement of the lighting system in the two foyers of the building, which lasted from May to November 2007. The old lighting system from the opening year was based on a large number of incandescent lamps and was no longer up-to-date due to the high failure rate and poor energy efficiency .

The new lighting system Lichtregen was designed by product design students at the Bauhaus University Weimar and is based on 160 special lights with dimmable fluorescent lamps and a design concept of how these lights are arranged in the foyers. This lighting system was primarily intended to increase profitability, but also increase the attractiveness of the building.

In the course of installing the luminaires, further extensive renovation work was carried out in the foyer. The gradual modernization of other parts of the building is ongoing.
