Neven Mimica (born October 12, 1953 in Split ) is a Croatian politician and diplomat . Mimica has been Croatia's Deputy Prime Minister since 2011 and a member of the European Commission since July 2013 after joining the EU . 2013–2014 he took over the consumer protection department , and since the start of the Claude Juncker commission in November 2014 he has been responsible for European development cooperation .

Live and act

Mimica graduated from the University of Zagreb with a degree in foreign trade in 1976 . He then worked in the Croatian Committee on Foreign Relations from 1978 to 1987. After completing another degree in economics from the University of Zagreb, the Croat switched to the diplomatic service . Until 1997 Mimica was employed at embassies in Egypt and Turkey , for example .

Subsequently, Mimica entered the political service for the social democratic party Socijaldemokratska partija Hrvatske (SDP). From 1997 to 2001 he worked as State Secretary in the Croatian Ministry of Economic Affairs. The first ministerial post followed in 2001: Mimica was Croatian Minister for European Integration until 2003 . After eight years of membership in the opposition, the next career leap followed in December 2011: after the election victory of the Kukuriku coalition led by the SDP, Mimica took over the post of Deputy Prime Minister.

In April 2013 the European Commission announced that the Croatian would become a member of the Commission when his home country joined in July 2013. In this he took over the management of the consumer protection department. Commission President José Manuel Barroso described Mimica as "an experienced and committed European who can make an important contribution to the work of the European Commission".

In September 2014, Mimica was nominated by EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker as EU Development Commissioner and subsequently confirmed by the EU Parliament.
