Julian King

Sir Julian King (born August 22, 1962 in Northern Ireland ) is a British diplomat and politician . He was British Ambassador to Ireland (2009-12) and France (2016). From September 19, 2016, he was EU Commissioner responsible for the Security Union in the Juncker Commission .

Life

Julian King was born in Northern Ireland in 1962. He studied philosophy and theology at St Peter's College, Oxford University, England, and graduated with a BA . Then studied at the French École nationale d'administration . There he met the Danish Lotte Knudsen, whom he married in 1992. She works for the European External Action Service .

Diplomatic career

From 1985 King was an official of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office . From 1987 to 1990 he was stationed in Paris. As an expert on NATO and the EU's common foreign and security policy, he worked in Luxembourg, The Hague and Lisbon. From 1998 to 2003 he worked at the Permanent Mission of Great Britain to the EU in Brussels, where he represented his country on questions of EU "eastward expansion" and security policy. From 2003 to 2004 he was Counselor in the Permanent Mission of the United Kingdom to the United Nations in New York with responsibility for negotiations in the UN Security Council .

He was then the UK's permanent representative to the Political and Security Committee of the EU in Brussels until 2007 , which he chaired during the presidency of his country in 2005. In 2008 he became head of cabinet of EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson , where he represented the EU at the Doha Round of the World Trade Organization . From 2009 to 2011 he was British Ambassador to Ireland, then until 2014 Director General in the Northern Ireland Office and then until 2015 Director General for Economic and Consular Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In February 2016 he took up the post as British Ambassador in Paris .

In 2014 King was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II of the Order of Victoria .

EU commissioner

On July 8, 2016, King was nominated as the new British EU Commissioner by British Prime Minister David Cameron . King was appointed Commissioner for the new Security Union portfolio on September 19, 2016. He succeeded his predecessor Lord Jonathan Hill , who resigned on June 25, 2016 due to the Brexit referendum.
