Enzo Moavero Milanesi (born August 17, 1954 in Rome ) is an Italian lawyer and non-party politician. From November 2011 to February 2014 he was Minister for European Policy, from June 1, 2018 to September 5, 2019 he was Italian Foreign Minister .

Career

Moavero Milanesi, whose family originally comes from Lombardy , graduated from La Sapienza University in Rome in 1977 with a law degree . From 1977 to 1979 he served in the Guardia di Finanza , most recently as a first lieutenant . This was followed by study visits to the College of Europe in Bruges and to the University of Texas at Dallas . In 1983 he joined the European Commission . From 1992 to 1994 he worked as an Italian ministerial official and then State Secretary in the Amato and Ciampi governments, particularly in the field of European policy. In 1995 the new EU Commissioner Mario Monti appointed him his head of cabinet . In 2002 Moavero Milanesi became Deputy Secretary General of the Commission, and in 2006 a judge at the General Court of the European Union in Luxembourg . On November 16, 2011, as Minister without Portfolio of the Monti government, he was given responsibility for European policy. On April 28, 2013, he was confirmed in this office as part of the Letta cabinet . In the parliamentary elections in Italy in 2013 , he ran for Mario Monti's citizens' list Scelta Civica , but did not make it into parliament. On June 1, 2018, Moavero Milanesi became Foreign Minister in the government of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte . With the formation of the Conte II cabinet in September 2019, he left the government.

Enzo Moavero Milanesi has taught European law at the private university LUISS in Rome, at the private Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi in Milan and at the La Sapienza University in Rome since the 1990s . Since 2007 he has been a professor at the private College of Europe in Bruges and, since 2014, he has also been a professor of European law at LUISS.
