The parliamentary elections in Cyprus in 2006 for the House of Representatives took place on May 21, 2006. The turnout was 87.91%. Participation was traditionally high, as voting is compulsory.

Results

The communist Anorthotiko Komma Ergazomenou Laou (Reconstruction Party of the Working People, AKEL) received 31.1 percent. She suffered heavy losses, but remained the strongest force. The conservative Dimokratikos Synagermos (Democratic Collection, DISY) was the second strongest with 30.4%, but also lost votes. The social democratic party Kinima Sosialdimokraton (Movement of Social Democrats, EDEK) received 8.9% and recorded an increase in votes. The centrist Evropaiko Komma (European Party, Evroko) received 5.7 percent. The green Kinima Oikologon Perivallontiston (ecology and environmental movement, KOP) received 1.9 percent.

The bourgeois-liberal oriented Dimokratiko Komma (Democratic Party, DIKO) experienced the greatest gain in votes with 17.9% of the votes (2001: 14.8%). The party has provided President Tassos Papadopoulos since 2000 . The coalition is one of the forces that is skeptical of reunification with the Turkish part of Cyprus . Tassos Papadopoulos had called in the 2004 referendum against reunification.
