Adina Ioana Vălean (born February 16, 1968 in Țintea , Băicoi , Prahova district ) is a Romanian politician and member of the European Parliament for the Partidul Național Liberal . She has been a member of the European Parliament since 2007, of the ALDE Group from 2007 to 2014, and of the EPP Group since 2014. From July 2014 to January 2017, Vălean was one of the 14 Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament . She is considered one of the most experienced Romanian MPs. She has been the EU Commissioner for Transport since December 1, 2019 .

Life

education

Vălean studied mathematics , followed by a degree in European integration and security studies. She added a postgraduate degree in security and defense policy. Until 1997 she worked as a math teacher.

In 1997 Vălean moved to the Ministry of Youth and Sport. From 1999 to 2001 she worked for two non-governmental organizations.

Political engagement at the state level

Adina Vălean joined the Partidul Național Liberal in 1999 , from 2000 to 2002 she held the office of general secretary of the youth organization of the PNL. In 2002 she became a member of the party's “Permanent Bureau” ( Biroului Permanent ) as well as chair of the party's working group for economic development, privatization and competition policy.

In 2000 Vălean was deputy head of the PNL election campaign for the parliamentary elections. From 2004 to 2006 Vălean was a member of the Romanian Parliament for the constituency of Călărași.

Entry into the European Parliament

In 2006 - before Romania's accession to the European Union - Vălean had the status of a parliamentary observer at the European Parliament, in order to become familiar with the functioning of the parliament. In the 2007 by-election in Romania , she was elected to the European Parliament on the PNL list. Like all PNL MPs, she joined the liberal ALDE group . The MPs elected her one of the group's deputy chairmen. For the remaining two years of the 6th legislative term, Vălean was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Temporary Committee on Climate Change . She was also a deputy member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs . During that time, Vălean was particularly active on the subject of free movement for Romanians and Romanians, and she was also the rapporteur on the abolition of roaming charges in the European Union.

In the 2009 European elections Vălean defended its mandate. She was re-elected as deputy chairman of the ALDE group. She was also a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (2009–12), the Petitions Committee and the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (2012–14) for her group . She was an alternate member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (2009-11) and the Committee on Budgets .

After the 2014 European elections , in which Vălean moved in again, her party and with it all MEPs decided to change parliamentary groups: Instead of the liberal ALDE group, they switched to the group of the European People's Party (EPP) . From July 2014 to January 2014, the members of the European Parliament elected her as one of the 14 Vice-Presidents . She was also a member of the EPP Group in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and in the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, which she chaired from 2017 to 2019. She was the first Romanian chairman of a parliamentary committee at all. She was also a deputy member of the Committee on International Trade.

In the European elections in 2019 Vălean again defended its mandate. In the 9th electoral term starting in 2019, she was again a member of the EPP Group. For the group, she was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, which she chaired, and a deputy member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.

Nomination for Commissioner

After the Romanian candidate Rovana Plumb for the post of commissioner in the EU Commission under Commission President Von der Leyen was rejected by the European Parliament and the Dăncilă government was subsequently voted out of the Romanian parliament by a vote of no confidence , it was initially not clear who would go to Romania was to be sent to the newly appointed EU Commission. Only after the new PNL minority government was confirmed under Ludovic Orban , this decided to nominate Vălean and Siegfried Mureșan . Von der Leyen opted for Vălean. On December 1, 2019, she took up her new position as EU Commissioner.

Gheorghe-Vlad Nistor took her place in the EU Parliament .

Scandal about the transit traffic on the Brenner

During a meeting to Brenner transit in Fortezza on February 14, 2020 Commissioner fell Valean according Tiroler Tageszeitung content in the transit issue as uncompromisingly. As part of the meeting, she asked Tyrol to withdraw the driving bans that the state had introduced as "emergency measures" against the transit congestion. The commissioner was very direct: If Tyrol does not give in on the transit issue, the Tyrolean daily newspaper will return, it could leave the internal market with Austria and become a " Switzerland  II".

While the transport ministers of Germany and Italy supported them in calling for the freight traffic restrictions to be lifted, Austria's Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz supported the Tyrolean governor Günther Platter .

As a reaction to the transit meeting, Platter sent a protest note to EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen the next day .

Adina Vălean has been married to Crin Antonescu since September 25, 2009 .
