Ylva Johansson (born February 13, 1964 in Huddinge , Sweden ) is a Swedish politician and Commissioner for Home Affairs in the von der Leyen Commission . Johansson is a member of the Social Democratic Labor Party and was Minister of Education and Welfare under Göran Persson and Minister of Labor in the Löfven I and Löfven II governments .

Career

Ylva Johansson studied at the University of Lund mathematics and physics on teaching . In 1988 she moved into the Reichstag for the Euro-Communist Left Party . Johansson was a member of Parliament's Education Committee. She switched to the Social Democratic Labor Party in 1992 , where she is considered a proponent of the left wing. From 1994 to 1998 she was school minister in the social democratic government of Göran Persson . Johansson then moved to the private sector for several years. From 2004 to 2006 she was Minister of Welfare. Johansson was then a member of the Swedish Parliament until she was appointed Minister of Labor in October 2014 .

On August 8, 2019, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven announced that Johansson would be nominated as EU Commissioner for the von der Leyen Commission . She then stepped down as Minister of Labor on September 10, 2019. On the same day she was introduced by Ursula von der Leyen as the designated commissioner for home affairs . Johansson took up her new position as EU Commissioner after her election on December 1, 2019.
