Carl Gustav Wilhelm Tham (born July 5, 1939 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish politician and diplomat .

Life

He studied literature and history at Stockholm University . In 1969 he became general secretary of the liberal Swedish party Folkpartiet . In the 1976 Reichstag elections , he was elected to the Swedish Reichstag . He was a member of the Reichstag until 1982. At the same time he took on the role of State Secretary in the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1976 to 1978 and was then Minister of Energy from 1978/1979. From 1979 to 1981 he was special advisor to the Foreign Minister for questions of development aid and finally until 1982 State Secretary for Development Aid in the Foreign Ministry.

From 1982 he was Director General of the Swedish Agency for International Development Cooperation until he became Swedish Minister for Education and Science in 1994. Tham remained minister until 1998 and in 1999 took over the function of general secretary of the International Olof Palme Center.

In 2002 he became the Swedish ambassador to Germany . He held this position until 2006.

In 2008 he was part of the so-called education, training and science competence team of the Hamburg SPD candidate for mayor Michael Naumann .

Tham has various honorary functions. He was chairman of the House of Dance Foundation, Stockholm, the Central Committee for the Promotion of Artists and the Board of Directors of the Swedish Institute for Future Studies.

Carl Tham is married to Carin Norberg , the director of the Swedish Agency for International Development Cooperation.

Awards

Tham expressed himself to reject medal awards on principle. Against this background, in 2003 he also refused to be awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit, which led to irritation.
