Mats Hellström (born January 12, 1942 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish politician and diplomat .

Life

He was born to Gunnar and Kajsa Hellström (nee Johansson). After graduating from Stockholm University in 1965, he taught economics at the university from 1965 to 1969. He joined the Swedish Social Democratic Labor Party and was a member of the youth organization's board from 1968 to 1972. In 1969 he also became a member of the executive committee of the Social Democratic Labor Party. In the same year he was elected as a member of the Swedish Parliament. He ultimately held both functions until 1996. In parliament he was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. From 1982 to 1983 he was chairman of the finance committee.

From 1969 to 1982 he was part of the Swedish delegation to the United Nations . From 1970 to 1975 he held the position of chairman of the royal commission for childcare. From 1974 to 1976 he was also a special advisor in the Ministry of Labor.

From 1983 to 1986 he was the Swedish Minister for Foreign Trade. This was followed by the post of Minister of Agriculture from 1986 to 1991, where he was also responsible for Nordic cooperation. From 1992 to 1994 he was vice chairman and head of the social democratic group of the EU parliamentary group. In 1994 he again became Minister for Foreign Trade, EU Relations and Nordic Cooperation. In 1996 he became the Swedish ambassador to Germany . In 2002 he returned to Sweden and was then Landshövding of Stockholms län until 2006 .

Family and personal

Hellström is married and has a son and a daughter. In addition to Swedish , he also speaks German , English and French .
