Stella Kyriakides , Greek Στέλλα Κυριακίδου (born March 10, 1956 in Nicosia , Cyprus ) is a Cypriot politician ( Dimokratikos Synagermos ). She is a member of the Cypriot parliament . She is also a member and was President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from October 6, 2017 to January 22, 2018 (see also the list of Presidents of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe ). In the von der Leyen Commission , she took over the office of Commissioner for Health on December 1, 2019 .

Private life, education and activity

Stella Kyriakides studied psychology in Reading and Manchester . She worked in the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Cyprus from 1979 to 2006. She is president of the first breast cancer movement in Cyprus and was appointed president of the National Committee on Cancer Strategies by the Council of Ministers in 1999. In 2013 she organized the first breast cancer awareness campaign at the Council of Europe .

Parliamentary career

In 2006 Stella Kyriakides was elected to the Cypriot parliament. She is a member of the Health Committee, Foreign Affairs and Europe Committee and Vice President of the Democratic Rally Party.

Stella Kyriakides is Chair of the Cyprus Delegation to the Council of Europe. On October 6, 2017, she was elected President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe as the successor to the resigned Pedro Agramunt Font de Mora in the third round of the electoral process with a large majority over the other candidate, Emanuelis Zingeris ( Lithuania , EPP / CD). She was the 30th President of the Congregation since 1949, the third woman in that office, and the first from Cyprus. Her term of office ended on January 22, 2018 and was succeeded by Michele Nicoletti .
