Margaritis Schinas ( Greek Μαργαρίτης Σχοινάς ; born July 28, 1962 in Thessaloniki ) is a Greek politician of the Nea Dimokratia (ND) party. From 2007 to 2009 he was a member of the European Parliament in the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats . From 2014 to 2019 he was chief spokesman for the EU Commission . Since December 1, 2019, he has been Vice President of the EU Commission and, as Commissioner for the Promotion of the European Lifestyle, is responsible for migration, equality and diversity.

Life

Margaritis Schinas obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Thessaloniki in 1985 and a Diploma in Advanced European Studies (DAES) from the College of Europe in Bruges in 1986 . In 1987 he earned a Master of Science degree in Public Administration and Policy from the London School of Economics .

Since 1990 he has worked for the European Commission in various areas. For example, from 1993/94 he was a cabinet member under EU commissioners Abel Matutes and Marcelino Oreja Aguirre . During the Prodi Commission he was Deputy Head of Cabinet of Vice-President Loyola de Palacio from 1999 to 2004 , and from June 2004 to September 2007 he was Head of Cabinet of Commissioner Márkos Kyprianoú .

In the 6th electoral term of the European Parliament , he was from October 1, 2007, as a replacement for Andonis Samaras until July 13, 2009, a full member of the Budget Committee and the delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee and a deputy member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee for the Nea Dimokratia (ND) in the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats . He then returned to the EU Commission. From 2010 to 2013 he was Deputy Head of the Bureau of European Policy Advisers (BEPA), the advisory body for European policy.

Since November 2014 he has been chief spokesman for the EU Commission. In December 2015 he became Deputy Director General of the Directorate General for Communication . In July 2019, the Greek government nominated him as a candidate for EU commissioner for the von der Leyen Commission . He has been Commissioner for the Promotion of the European Lifestyle and for Asylum and Migration Issues since December 2019 . It is associated Katharina von Schnurbein , coordinator of the European Commission to combat anti-Semitism . Schinas was also commissioned to coordinate the dialogue with churches and religious communities. Schnurbein is supported by a newly deployed team, which is exclusively concerned with the topic of "combating anti-Semitism".
