Olivér Várhelyi (born March 22, 1972 in Szeged ) is a Hungarian diplomat . From 2015 he headed the Hungarian EU representation in Brussels. He has been Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy since December 1, 2019 .

Life

Olivér Várhelyi 1994 he obtained a Master of European Legal Studies at the University of Aalborg in Denmark , 1996, he graduated in law at the University of Szeged from. In 2005 he passed the bar exam.

In 1995 he started at the Hungarian Ministry of Industry and Trade, and in 1996 he moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2001 he worked in the in Brussels , where from 2003 to 2006 he was head of the legal department of the permanent representation of Hungary to the EU. As a diplomat he was among other things represented in the negotiations for Hungary's accession to the EU in 2004 . In 2006 he returned to Budapest , where he headed the European Law Department in the Hungarian Ministry of Justice until 2008. From 2008 to 2011 he was department head in the EU Commission for Industrial Property Rights . In 2011 he became deputy head of the Hungarian EU representation under Péter Györkös , and in 2015 he succeeded Györkös as head of the embassy.

At the end of September 2019, the Hungarian government nominated him as a candidate for EU Commissioner of the von der Leyen Commission for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy , after the previous candidate László Trócsányi was rejected by the Legal Affairs Committee in the European Parliament . Várhelyi succeeded Johannes Hahn in this role on December 1, 2019 .

The media report that Várhelyi is considered to be very well versed in European politics. He is also known for having a very tough and rough tone with his employees. Várhelyi is independent and is considered Orbán confidante.
