László Trócsányi (2019)

László Trócsányi (born March 6, 1956 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian diplomat and politician .

Life

Trócsányi studied law at the Eötvös Loránd University . From 2000 to 2004 he was ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg and from October 1, 2010 to May 31, 2014 he was ambassador to France . From 2005 to 2013 he was also a member of the Venice Commission . From June 2014 the independent Trócsányi was Minister of Justice in the Hungarian government, from 2014 to 2018 in the Orbán III cabinet and from May 2018 in the Orbán IV cabinet .

In 2018 Trócsányi was made an honorary citizen of Csongrád County.

After the 2019 European elections , he moved to the European Parliament as a member of the European Parliament , and Judit Varga succeeded him as Minister of Justice on July 11, 2019 .

Trócsányi was nominated by the Hungarian government as a candidate as EU Commissioner for the von der Leyen Commission for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy , but was rejected by the Legal Affairs Committee in the European Parliament at the end of September 2019 . The EU parliamentarians accused him of irregularities in the work of his law firm during his time as Minister of Justice. The Hungarian EU ambassador Olivér Várhelyi was proposed as a replacement .
