Virginijus Sinkevičius (born November 4, 1990 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian politician ( LVŽS ), Seimas member since 2016 and Lithuania's Minister of Economic Affairs from November 2017 to 2019 . He was the youngest minister in Lithuanian history after regaining national independence. Since December 1, 2019, he has been Commissioner for Environment and Oceans in the von der Leyen Commission .

Life

After graduating from Salomėja Nėris Grammar School in 2009, Virginijus Sinkevičius completed a bachelor's degree in Economics and International Relations at Aberystwyth University from 2009 to 2012 . In 2012 he continued his education at the Office of the Prime Minister of Lithuania . From 2012 to 2013 he completed an LL.M. (International Law) from Maastricht University . From 2012 to 2015 he was the author and editor of The Lithuanian Tribune . In 2013 he worked in the Lithuanian representation in the USA. From 2013 to 2014 he was assistant to the project manager at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA). In 2014 he worked as a project manager at the Lithuanian postal company Lietuvos paštas . From 2014 to 2015 he took part in the “Kurk Lietuvai” program. From 2015 to 2016 he coordinated a project. Until November 2015 he worked in the investment agency Investuok Lietuvoje .

politics

Virginijus Sinkevičius Seimas had been a member since November 2016 . From November 22, 2016 he headed the Economic Committee in Parliament. Since June 2017 he has been a member of the Ethics Commission and from March 2017 deputy head of the parliamentary group of Lietuvos valstiečių ir žaliųjų sąjunga . On November 27, 2017, he was appointed Minister of Economy of Lithuania in the Skvernelis Cabinet (instead of the resigned Social Democrat Mindaugas Sinkevičius ) by President Dalia Grybauskaitė . On September 10, 2019, he was nominated for the position of Commissioner for Environment and Oceans on the von der Leyen Commission. He took up this post after his election on December 1, 2019.

family

Virginijus Sinkevičius grew up with his mother, a nursing assistant at the hospital, and a sister. He never saw his father.

Sinkevičius is married to the three years older Ukrainian Kateryna Sinkevičienė, whom he met in Maastricht (NL), and has one son.
