Salomėja Nėris (actually Salomėja Bačinskaitė-Bučienė ; born November 4 . Jul / 17th November  1904 greg. In the village Kiršai , community Alvitas , Rajon Vilkaviškis , Lithuania , † 7. July 1945 in Moscow ) was a Lithuanian poet.

Life

After graduating from high school in Vilkaviškis, she studied Lithuanian literature, German language and literature, pedagogy and psychology at the Lietuvos universitetas faculty of theology and philosophy in Kaunas from 1924 to 1928 . After completing her studies, she first worked as a Lithuanian and German teacher at the high school in Lazdijai . After her first poems had already appeared in 1923 and her first book publication, Anksti rytą , in 1927 , she worked in Kaunas as a poet, editor and translator from 1931. Among other things, she published in the left-wing avant-garde magazine Trečias frontas .

On the occasion of the annexation of Lithuania to the Soviet Union, she read her poem Poema apie Staliną to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on August 3, 1940 .

In 1941 she fled from the German Wehrmacht to Moscow , where she stayed until 1944. She returned briefly to Kaunas , but died in 1945 of liver cancer in a Moscow hospital.
