Vice President of the European Commission

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vice-President of the European Commission is a member of the European Commission who represents the Commission President when he is unable to attend. The office is freely assigned by the commission president and is added to the other duties of the commission member. The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy is to Art. 18 TEU always also a Vice-President of the Commission.

Up until now, each commission had several vice-presidents. Normally, the President is represented by the First Vice-President; only if he is also absent does one of the other vice-presidents take over the management. The President of the Commission sets a certain order for this.

The office of Vice President is also associated with increased remuneration. While the usual commission members receive a gross base salary of 19,910 euros from the EU budget for their work , the vice-presidents receive 22,122 euros and the commission president 24,423 euros (as of July 2008).
