criticism

Agramunt is criticized with regard to his work at the Council of Europe, among other things, because he is too close to the regime in Azerbaijan and at the same time is rapporteur for the Council of Europe.

The European Stability Initiative asked Agramunt to give up his position as rapporteur because he covered systematic human rights violations in Azerbaijan.

Agramunt was in Syria in March 2017 with Russian MPs and the Vice-Head of the State Duma ( lower house of parliament), Vladimir Vasilyev , and met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad , among others . In the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, cross-party members demanded his resignation. Since Agramunt refused, the Presidium withdrew his confidence on April 28, 2017 and announced that Agramunt was no longer allowed to travel, make statements or represent the assembly on behalf of the assembly. On June 27, 2017, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe passed a regulation with a clear majority of MEPs (154: 30) that allows the President of the Assembly and other officials to be voted out if they no longer enjoy the Assembly's confidence. This made it possible to impeach President Pedro Agramunt. Agramunt announced his resignation on October 6, 2017. A vote on his impeachment had been scheduled for the beginning of the next week of the session on October 9, 2017.

Agramunt's provisional successor was his deputy, the head of the British delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly, Roger James Gale .
