Mehmet Kaplan

Mehmet Güner Kaplan (born July 18, 1971 in Gaziantep , Turkey ) is a Swedish politician and was Minister for Housing in the Löfven I government from October 2014 to April 2016 . Kaplan is a member of the Miljöpartiet de Gröna (roughly: "Green Party for the Environment"), whose parliamentary group chairman in the Swedish parliament he was from 2010 to 2014. He was chairman of the Swedish Muslim Youth from 2000 to 2002 and spokesman for the Council of Swedish Muslims from 2005 to 2006.

Kaplan was on board the Mavi Marmara during the Ship-to-Gaza incident in 2010 . In July 2014, he compared Swedish Islamists who join the fighters of the Islamic State with the Swedish volunteers on the side of Finland in the 1940 Winter War. This comparison has met with harsh criticism from the Swedish public. Kaplan later spoke of a misunderstanding and an unfortunate choice of words. The social democratic politician Nalin Pekgul criticized Kaplan as an Islamist .

In April 2016 he was again sharply criticized for having met with members of the right-wing extremist Gray Wolves and for comparing Israel's policy towards the Palestinians with the National Socialists . On April 18, Kaplan resigned as minister.
