Alfred Ade

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfred Ade (born July 17, 1876 in Sárbogárd ; † November 12, 1968 in Gemünden am Main ) was a German veterinarian , botanist , plant pathologist and mycologist . After childhood, adolescence and studies in Munich , Ade devoted himself primarily to researching the Franconian flora, but also to the local flora of other European countries on numerous research trips. In the first half of the 20th century he was the director of the Botanical Garden in Würzburg and received an honorary doctorate from the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg for his life's work .

Life

Alfred Ade was born on July 17, 1876 in the small town of Sárbogárd in Austria-Hungary as the son of a couple from Kempten (Allgäu) who owned the land . From 1887 to 1893 he attended the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich, where he also passed his Abitur. He then completed a degree in veterinary medicine at the Royal University of Veterinary Medicine in Munich , which he completed in 1899 with a license to practice medicine (medical professions) . Already in elementary school Ade showed a lively botanical interest and within a few years, at the latest when he was studying, had a detailed knowledge of the florerns of all mountains accessible from Munich and, through holiday stays, also of the Hungarian flora and the flora of the Central and Eastern Alps . He already had collections of plants, minerals , fossils , snails and beetles .

After completing his studies, Ade worked for about a year as an assistant to the Lindau district veterinarian and moved to Tiefenbach in Upper Bavaria in October 1900. Shortly thereafter, Ade applied for the position of district veterinarian in Weismain, Upper Franconia, which had been vacant since November 1900, and began work there in January 1901. As early as 1904 Ade began to apply for other veterinary positions, but stayed in Weismain until 1912, where he also married his wife Eva Gärtner, a farmer's daughter from Redwitz . During his stay in Weismain he described numerous plant species around the Kordigast , Kröttenstein , Pfauengrund , Külmitzberg and adjacent valleys and mountains such as the Bärental and the Kleinziegenfelder Tal . The results collected were published in the two works Flora of the vascular plants of Kulmbach and the adjacent areas of the Fichtelgebirge, Franconian Forest and Franconian Jura (1907) and Flora of the vascular plants of Bamberg (1914) by Kurt Harz.

In 1912 Ade moved to Brückenau to take up his new position as a district veterinarian. Ade found his last job until retirement, also as a district veterinarian, in Gemünden am Main in 1917. While he carried out botanical research trips all over Europe until 1939 and often worked together with local experts, Ade concentrated on the local flora and in particular on nature conservation after the outbreak of World War II .

Ade worked as a veterinarian and head of the Botanical Garden in Würzburg until around 1950. He died at the age of 92 on November 12, 1968 in Gemünden am Main.

Awards and recognition

In recognition of his numerous scientific journals and his commitment to conservation was Ade of the Science Faculty of the University of Würzburg with the honorary doctorate with the title Dr. hc excellent.

Due to the thorough research into the flora of the Weismainer area, Ade was named after Ade in honor of a whitebeam species discovered in the Weismainer area by the biologist Norbert Meyer, who specializes in whitebeam species ( Sorbus adeana ). Furthermore, between 1911 and 2000, a total of 25 species of mushrooms were named after Ade.
