The Kröttenstein is 531.5  m above sea level. NN high mountain in the Franconian Alb near Altenkunstadt in the Upper Franconian district of Lichtenfels ( Bavaria ).

Geographical location

The Kröttenstein rises around 135 meters above Siedamsdorf and the Schöpfleinsgrund valley in the northern foothills of the Franconian Alb in the Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park . The dominance to the next higher mountain, the Kleiner Kordigast , is 1.725 km.

The valley floor consists of rocks from the Lias . Dogger rocks lie above it . Up to the foot of the mountain, the gently rising valley slopes consist of Opalinus Clay , followed by an iron sandstone step over which there is a thin layer of regalia . Reefs of the Malm Delta form the actual mountain above. The upper layers contain numerous fossils such as silicified sponges , trochitic rubble and shells .

Protected areas

Like the Kordigast, the Kröttenstein is located in the multi-part fauna-flora-habitat area of ​​dry grasslands, meadows and forests around Weismain (FFH no. 5933-371). The mountain lies entirely in the northern part of the 1021.64 km² protected landscape area of Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest, founded in 2001 (LSG no. 322697).
