As upper Mainland a hilly landscape is francs along the upper run of the Main ( upper Maintal or upper Maintal ) and its two source fluxes respectively. The Obermainland in the narrower sense mainly refers to the physical-geographical landscape of the Obermainisches Hügelland , which ends along the Main at the Rodach estuary. However, both historically and by tourism associations, the term is extended to the Main catchment area up to the confluence of the Regnitz near Bamberg , and more rarely even to the exit of the Main from Upper Franconia , while the Thuringian shares in the Sonneberg district are often not included. This means that the Obermaintal consists essentially of the Main-Regnitz valley area , the Itz-Baunach hill country and the Upper Main hill country .

Geographical classification

The Upper Mainland is bordered by the Franconian Forest in the north, the Fichtel Mountains in the east and the Franconian Switzerland and Franconian Alb in the south. The Upper Mainland includes almost the entire district of Kulmbach , as well as large parts of the districts of Bayreuth , Lichtenfels and Bamberg and a small part of the Kronach district . The section between the district town of Lichtenfels via Bad Staffelstein to the municipality of Ebensfeld is called God's garden .

Geology and flora

The Upper Mainland is bounded by the Franconian Line , the ascent to the higher-lying low mountain range Frankenwald and Fichtelgebirge . Shell limestone predominates as a rock form. A wide valley runs along the Main, which serves as a flood plain when the river runs unregulated. Parallel valleys stretch to the side of the Main. The whole thing is more reminiscent of a hilly landscape due to the small height differences.

The upper Mainland is a predominantly agricultural cultural landscape with partly under nature conservation standing floodplain meadows . Large meadows and arable land are usually framed by bushes or trees, with deciduous trees predominating . But there are also larger stocks of softwood .

tourism

The Obermaintal is an important region for tourism in Upper Franconia . In addition to hiking and cycling tourism, various forms of cultural tourism are also popular. Important destinations here include Kulmbach , Lichtenfels , Bamberg , Bad Staffelstein with the thermal baths appropriately named , Banz Monastery , Ansberg , Staffelberg and the Vierzehnheiligen basilica .
