description
The valley runs in a north-south direction between the places Weismain and Kleinziegenfeld in the Upper Franconian district of Lichtenfels . Of Bamberg is 24 kilometers away to the northeast. By the under nature conservation standing valley which flows Weismain . The sides of the valley are formed by towering limestone cliffs that are eagerly used by climbers. The towns of Kleinziegenfeld, Großziegenfeld , Arnstein , Wallersberg , Schammendorf and Weismain , which belong to the city of Weismain, are located in it . The most famous rocks are the Rote Wand, the Roland Rocks, the Petrified Giant, the Blade, the Stone Monk and its counterpart, the Praying Nun. There is a legend about the stone monk that "a hermit once lived there who turned Christ off the door on the day of his death on the way through the Kleinziegenfeld valley and then froze to stone".
flora
The Kleinziegenfelder valley is dominated by deciduous and mixed forests . At Kleinziegenfeld and Wallersberg there are large dry and semi-arid grass slopes with sparse, but even, juniper vegetation . These slopes were created over several centuries by the intensive grazing with sheep of the residents of the Jura villages. As a result, lush vegetation could not develop and the juniper bushes were repeatedly removed by the shepherds in order to have a better overview of the herds.
In the valley a variety of flowers, grasses and ferns grow, these include: columbine , Bergaster , yew , fringed gentian , spring gentian , Digitalis grandiflora , goat's beard , Carlina vulgaris , Pasque , Ausdauernder Lein , hepatica , lily of the valley , various orchids , Cheddar pink , Solomon's seal , cowslip , Daphne , ostrich fern , Turk's union , centaury , white and red forest bird , forest anemone , white tongue and willow . Some of the plants are rare, endangered and therefore protected.
Attractions
Rocky hills, castle ruins, romantic half-timbered villages and numerous mills are the sights of this valley. The last Franconian occurrence of the Apollo butterfly is there . It is inextricably linked with open, unspoilt limestone rocks. The caterpillars of the moth are on the Sedum album ( Sedum album as a single) forage crop instructed that grows only there. Another attraction is the juniper slope near Kleinziegenfeld, where a cyclist statue is clearly visible on a rock above the village.
Cyclist statue Claudius
The first statue of a cyclist was erected in 1905 by two little goat field brothers with the intention of creating a landmark. They made a life-size figure out of sawdust and wood, dressed it in tails and top hats , put it on a pennywheel and fastened it to the rock. Curiously, this bike was the first and only one in Kleinziegenfeld at that time. Georg Ammon , who came from Kleinziegenfeld and a high school professor in Regensburg, had the idea to set up such a doll . There is no longer any record of the exact background of the list; there are several theories: It could have been built to commemorate the times when the Kleinziegenfelder valley was mainly visited by cyclists, or as a counterpart to the guns and dragoons that stood on rock heads elsewhere. After a third explanation, a cyclist wanted to cross the valley over a bridge that had not existed for a long time. But since he didn't want to turn back either, he is still standing on the rock today.
Initially, the figure stood on the rock for a few years until it was blown away in a strong storm. In 1933 a new statue of a cyclist was erected. Since it carried a swastika flag , the statue was dismantled during World War II so as not to draw the attention of the Allies to the village. In 1952 a third statue was erected, which had to be renovated in 1971 after vandalism. The legs and arms were made of solid spruce wood with joints. The Claudius statue has had a red and white flag since 1952.
Hiking trails
- Apollofalter hiking trail: A circular hiking trail about six kilometers long, designated by the Landschaftspflegeverband Lichtenfels e. V. and the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection . It leads through the middle part of the valley and connects the places Weihersmühle , Arnstein , Kleinziegenfeld and Schrepfersmühle . The two small hiking car parks at Kleinziegenfeld and Arnstein, which are provided with information boards, are particularly suitable as a starting point. The paths are paved, but often only gravel. The hiking trail can be expanded with several extra tours. The aim of the hiking trail is to discover and get to know the natural habitat of the rare Apollo butterfly .
