geography

source

The Krassach spring is located roughly in the middle of the Bärental , about 300 meters south of the Herbstmühle . It emerges as a layer spring in several small, merging springs directly at the foot of the eastern slope flank of the Bärental and is largely close to nature. The source is fed, among other things, by a small underground stream, which initially disappears as a stream shrinkage in the back of the Bärental. Immediately after the source, a small weir divides the river into its natural course and into the Mühlbach to the Herbstmühle. According to old stories, the source is said to have originated much further above its current position.

Course and description

From the source, the Krassach meanders relatively close to nature through the Bärental, except for a few straightened sections. The mill stream of the Herbstmühle is only about 370 meters long and joins the stream again immediately after the mill. After another 500 m a small weir branches off the Mühlbach of the Krassacher Mühle . It has a length of about 600 meters and runs largely parallel at a distance of about 50 m from the Krassach. Shortly after the mill, at the end of the actual Bärental, it joins the stream again.

In the further course of the stream is predominantly straightened by humans and flows first through the Weismainer district Krassach , past several ponds for trout breed and at Niesten from its single larger tributary, the Niestener millstream fed to the left side. About 300 m downstream is the lumber weir ( 50 ° 4 '38.5 "  N , 11 ° 14' 52.2"  O ), a natural waterfall, the two sintered and falls mossy stages. Shortly after this stage, a third Mühlbach splits off from the Krassach. Initially still free running, it is canalised in the Weismain urban area and flows into the Weismain at the Püls brewery . The Weismainer Mühlbach used to drive the box mill, among other things .

The Krassach is canalised along Niestener Straße over a length of about 250 meters and flows further between the fields east of the St2191 towards Altenkunstadt. A few meters from its mouth, it passes the joint wastewater treatment plant in Altenkunstadt and Weismain and serves as a fresh water supply. It then flows into the Weismain south of Woffendorf.

biology

flora

The entire length of the river is lined mainly with alders and willows. In the upper reaches and especially near the calcareous spring there are increasingly narrow stream ash forests . In the spring there are also dense populations of the Opposite Milkwort . The narrow wooded fringes of alder, ash and willow on the river banks are the remnants of the former alluvial forests , which were completely cleared down to small remnants by human land use in the Middle Ages. Nevertheless, the narrow, remaining wooded lines are very important for the stream, as they serve as a buffer strip to the neighboring agriculture and protect the Krassach from warming with their shade. With the exception of the straightened sections in Krassach and Weismain, the river bed and the bank areas are richly structured and flatter areas alternate with deeper ones. The Krassach also has a lively change in the upper reaches of sloping, faster flowing and shallower, slower flowing sections of water.

fauna

Mühlkoppen , brook lamprey and brook trout live in the river , as well as stone fly larvae , small and large dragonfly larvae , mayfly larvae , caddis fly larvae , brook flea shrimp and strudelworms . Occasionally fire salamanders and spring maidens can also be spotted.
