Karolina Skog (born March 30, 1976 in Åhus ) is a Swedish politician . She belongs to the environmental party The Greens . She has been Environment Minister in the Löfven government since May 25, 2016.

Personal history

In 1995 Karolina Skog graduated from Vipeholmsgymnasiet in Lund . In 2005 she obtained a master's degree in human ecology from Lund University .

Karolina Skog lives in Stockholm . She is married.

Political career (selection)

From 2001 Karolina Skog got involved in the environmental party The Greens . Until 2004 she worked in the administration of the party's youth organization and between 2001 and 2006 she took on various tasks in the party, including the publication of the party newspaper.

The local politician's engagement focused on Malmö. From 2006 to 2010 she was both political director of the environmental party in Malmö and traffic officer for the future of traffic in the city. In 2014/2015 she was a member of the Malmö City Council and chaired the committee for town planning and public utilities as well as city commissioner for this area.

She has been Environment Minister in the Löfven government since May 25, 2016.

  • Reducing microplastics in the oceans

In her capacity as Minister of the Environment, Karolina Skog is committed to reducing microplastics in the oceans. To this end, the government initiated a ban on these substances in certain cosmetic products in 2018 and provided the municipalities with financial means to clean up Swedish beaches from microplastics.

  • Reduction of pollutant emissions from motor vehicles

From 2020, the municipalities should be able to decide for themselves whether and where they want to introduce low-emission zones. Three types of zones are possible: The first restricts heavy goods traffic . In the second zone, which applies to cars , diesel vehicles that meet the Euro 5 or 6 standard are still allowed until July 1, 2022 , after that only the Euro 6 standard . Petrol vehicles must meet the Euro 6 standard in the second zone from the start. In the third zone, only electric cars , fuel cell vehicles , hybrid electric vehicles and gas vehicles that meet the European emissions standard are allowed.
