Rovana Plumb (born June 22, 1960 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian politician of the Partidul Social Democrat . She has been Minister for EU Funds in the Dăncilă Cabinet since January 29, 2018 .

Life

Plumb studied various economic topics at several international institutes. She started as an engineering intern in 1984, and in 1992 she became Commercial Director of SC Miraj SA. From 1995 to 2000 she was chairwoman of SC Gerovital Cosmetics SA.

Plumb joined the PSD, then PDSR, in 1994. There she was a member of the National Council and the coordination committee, was chairwoman of the women's organization and deputy chairwoman of the PSD. From 2001 to 2004 she worked as State Secretary for the Romanian government and during this time also chaired the state authority for consumer protection. From 2004 to 2007 she was a member of the Romanian Parliament . In 2009 she was elected to the European Parliament . However, on May 6, 2012, she resigned after being appointed Minister for Forestry and the Environment in the Ponta Cabinet . In 2014 she became Minister of Labor, Family and Social Security and held this post until the resignation of the Ponta government after the fire disaster in Bucharest in 2015 .

On June 29, 2017, she became Minister for Funding in the Tudose cabinet . After allegations of corruption, Prime Minister Mihai Tudose called for her resignation. Plumb resigned on October 12, 2017. The future EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen nominated the politician as Commissioner for Transport, but after a hearing on September 26, 2019 before the Legal Affairs Committee of the EU Parliament , she was rejected by a clear majority. The majority of the committee said that the politician's potential financial conflicts of interest had not been resolved. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis also spoke out against her candidacy and called on the Romanian government to nominate a new candidate. Fifteen committee members voted against the commissioner candidate, for her only six, with two abstentions.
