Internal Market and Services Commissioner
The Commissioner for Internal Market and Services is a member of the European Commission . The Directorate General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs reports to him . The internal market department has existed in various forms since the European Economic Community was founded in 1958, and in 2004 it was expanded to include services.
The current incumbent in the von der Leyen Commission has been Thierry Breton since December 2019 .
Since the department also includes financial services, the re-regulation of which will be part of the goal of the European Union after the financial crisis from 2007 , it is considered a key department. The nomination of her predecessor Barnier, who had spoken out in favor of stricter supervision, was therefore criticized by the British and suggested that the financial services should be outsourced from the department. However, Commission President José Manuel Barroso did not accept this request.
