Rey Commission
The EC Commission Rey ( 1967 - 1970 ) was the first Commission of the European Communities , as a result of the merger agreement of 1965 was formed.
This envisaged the merging of the previously existing individual commissions of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) to form the European Commission .
The Belgian Jean Rey became the President of the Commission . Under Rey's aegis, the European Customs Union was established on July 1, 1968 . The Commission also made a major contribution to the liberalization of trade in agricultural products and passed legislation to promote the free movement of people within the EC . For his work at the commission, Jean Rey was awarded the Charlemagne Prize on May 15, 1969 in Aachen .
