Commissioner for Justice and Rule of Law

The Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship was a member of the European Commission . The department was newly created when the Barroso II Commission took office in 2010. Before that, there was the Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security since 1995 , whose office has now been divided into a justice and domestic affairs department . In 2014 the departments were redistributed again. The office of Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality is now held by the Czech Věra Jourová .

The office was filled by Viviane Reding from Luxembourg . After this after the 2014 European elections the European Parliament had returned, it was followed by her compatriot for the rest of the Barroso Commission term Martine Reichert .
