David Byrne (politician)

David Byrne [ ˈdeɪvɪd bɜːn ] (born April 26, 1947 ) is an Irish politician and was EU Commissioner until November 2004 .

Byrne studied law and in 1970 as a lawyer admitted. After a career in the Irish Bar Association and several excursions into politics as a consultant on legal individual questions, he was 1997 General prosecutor .

From 1999 to 2004 he was Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection in the European Commission . His responsibilities in particular the EU directives fell ban on tobacco advertising , such as the ban on misleading terms such as " light " or "mild" on tobacco products, or the draft EU regulation banning so-called Health claims , that health claims to foods ( Health Claims Regulation ).

David Byrne is married with three children.
