António Vitorino [ ɐnˈtɔni̯u vituˈrinu ] (born January 12, 1957 in Lisbon ) is a socialist Portuguese politician . From 1999 to 2004 he was EU Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs .

António Vitorino received his Masters in Law and Political Science from the Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon .

In 1980 he became a member of parliament and was a member of the committee for European integration until 1984 . From 1984 to 1985 he was State Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs, from 1985 to 1986 Chairman of the Constitutional Committee of the Portuguese Parliament. In 1986 he moved to Macau as State Secretary and representative of the Portuguese President until he returned in 1989. From 1989 to 1994 he was the Portuguese constitutional judge. In 1994 he became a member of the European Parliament , but returned to Portugal in 1995 to become Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister (until 1997) .

In September 1999 he was appointed European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Justice . He resigned from office in November 2004. From June 11th to 14th, 2015 he took part in the 63rd Bilderberg Conference in Telfs-Buchen , Austria .

In 2017 he was on the advisory boards of the International Migration Initiative (part of the Open Society Foundations ) and the Transatlantic Council on Migration (part of the Migration Policy Institute ).

On June 29, 2018, Vitorino was elected as the new Director General of the International Organization for Migration  (IOM). He thus succeeded William L. Swing , whose term of office ended in September 2018. With Vitorino, a person who is not American has been elected to head the organization for only the second time since it was founded in 1951. The US candidate, Ken Isaacs , was eliminated before the last ballot.

António Vitorino is married and has two children. He has written several political science books.
