education

The son of an official of the Polish United Workers' Party studied political science at the university in his hometown of Szczecin. During his studies, which he completed with a master's degree in 2000 , he specialized in the integration of Poland into the European Union .

During his studies he worked temporarily as a graphic artist in a company in Szczecin and in the advertising department of the Reemtsma Polska company . In 1999 he found a job in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship Office in Szczecin.

Political career

After he had represented the SLD in the City Council of Szczecin from 2002 to 2004, he was elected to the Sejm as a candidate for the League of Democratic Left in the 2005 parliamentary elections. In 2007 he was able to defend his mandate. He was appointed to the Sejm Commission for National and Ethnic Minorities.

Napieralski also became General Secretary of the SLD on May 29, 2005. On May 31, 2008, he surprisingly prevailed in a vote against Wojciech Olejniczak and was elected chairman of the party. On April 22, 2008 he became a member of the newly founded Lewica parliamentary group .

On April 22, 2010 Napieralski announced his candidacy in the elections for the office of President of the Republic of Poland , which took place early due to the death of Lech Kaczyński in the plane crash near Smolensk . In the first round of elections on June 20, 2010, he achieved 13.7% of the vote and was in third place after Bronisław Komorowski and Jarosław Kaczyński . In the required runoff election on July 4, 2010, he did not run. He resigned on December 10, 2011 due to the worst result in his party's history in the 2011 parliamentary elections from the SLD chairmanship.

His successor was the former Central Committee Secretary, Prime Minister and SLD boss Leszek Miller . In the months that followed, Napieralski repeatedly criticized him publicly, accusing him of leading the party in an authoritarian manner and thereby repeatedly violating party statutes. He even called for Miller's removal by a party court. But Miller prevailed in the more than three-year conflict, on June 27, 2015 Napieralski resigned from the SLD.

Napieralski founded the new party “The White-Reds” (Biało-Czerwoni) with other former left-wing politicians, which defined itself as “social liberal”. Since the “white and red” did not collect enough signatures to be admitted to the 2015 parliamentary elections , he accepted the offer to apply for a seat in the Senate on the list of the liberal-conservative Platforma Obywatelska (PO). He was elected Senator of the Świnoujście constituency on October 25, 2015 .
