Ryszard Jerzy Petru (born July 6, 1972 in Wroclaw ) is a Polish economist and founder of the Nowoczesna party . From its inception in mid-2015 until November 2017, he was its chairman. He is a member of the 8th electoral term in the Polish Parliament.

Life

Petru was born the son of a physics professor in Wroclaw and graduated from the Jakub-Jasiński Lyceum there . He later studied at the Faculty of Computer Science and Management at the Technical University of Wroclaw and is also a graduate of Szkoła Główna Handlowa . During his student days, Petru was assistant to MP Władysław Frasyniuk . On the recommendation of his lecturer Leszek Balcerowicz , he started working at the Center for Social and Economic Analysis (Polish: Centrum Analiz Społeczno-Ekonomicznych ). While Balcerowicz was Finance Minister between 1997 and 2000 , Petru acted as an advisor on pension reform. Balcerowicz had already held his advisory role at the side of him in 1995. Petru was a member of the Freedom Union , but received no mandate in the 2001 parliamentary election with 4,646 votes. Between 2001 and 2004 he was an economist in the World Bank . As part of his area of ​​responsibility, he dealt with the reform of public finances, regional policy and the investment climate. Petru continued his career in the banks BPH , BRE and PKO BP and held various management positions. In 2014 he was briefly chairman of the supervisory board of the Polish State Railways , after which he moved to Solaris Bus & Coach in the same position .

Between 2011 and 2015 he was chairman of the Association of Polish Economists ( Polish Towarzystwo Polskich Ekonomistów )

On May 31, 2015, his party Nowoczesna ( The Modern Age ) was founded. In the parliamentary elections in autumn 2015 , he ran as the top candidate and received 129,088 votes in his constituency of Warsaw and entered the Sejm . His party received a national election result of 7.6% and became the fourth largest force in parliament with 28 elected MPs.

In November 2017, Petru was surprisingly voted out of office in the election for party chairman and was replaced by his then parliamentary group leader Katarzyna Lubnauer . In May 2018 he left together with two other members because of discontent the party and founded after a while the deputies circle Liberalno-Spoleczni .

Petru had appeared in the media during discussions about economic issues.

Although his party has comparatively few mandates to show for, Ryszard Petru plays an important role in the opposition to the Sole Ruling Law and Justice (PiS) and is seen by many as its leader.
