Srećko Horvat (* 1983 in Osijek , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian philosopher and author. He is best known for his work as director of the Subversive Festival in Zagreb .

Life

Horvat lived in Germany for the first 7 years of his life before returning to Yugoslavia, the Socialist Republic of Croatia , in 1990 . He currently lives in Zagreb . Horvat mainly publishes travel reports, including a. about Mali, Egypt, Israel and China. In addition to this activity, he also works as a columnist and translator, for example for the British Guardian .

Political activity

Horvat is considered a central figure on the new left in Croatia and the Balkans. He is particularly critical of Croatia's accession to the EU. In his publications, however, he also follows the protests in Western countries, such as the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring . In German-speaking countries he is best known for his interview volume After the End of History, in which he talks about some of the most influential political intellectuals of the present time on their attitude towards z. B. Interviewed Occupy Wall Street , the Chinese model of capitalism but also post-structuralism and post-colonialism. This band caused a sensation mainly because it brought together such diverse thinkers as (among others) Francis Fukuyama , Terry Eagleton , Stéphane Hessel , Slavoj Žižek and Gayatri Spivak .

Srećko Horvat is a member of the movement Democracy in Europe 2025 (DiEM25) founded in 2016.

Srećko Horvat is a signatory of the declaration published in 2017 on the common language of Croats , Serbs , Bosniaks and Montenegrins .

The Subversive Festival

In 2008 Horvat, together with Nikola Devčić and Dora Baras, founded the Subversive Festival, which takes place annually in Zagreb. In organizing the festival, he is the organizer of the international conference and the subversive forum, which supports the film festival with lectures and discussion events. The aim of the festival is to create a forum for critical voices and thus to influence Europe's democratic discourse. The political orientation of the festival can be assigned to the undogmatic, post-Soviet left; the main focus is on emancipatory issues and the criticism of nationalism. Prominent guests were e.g. B. Slavoj Žižek , Chantal Mouffe , Ernesto Laclau , the filmmaker Oliver Stone , and the chairman of the left-wing Greek party alliance SYRIZA , Alexis Tsipras . In Germany, the festival receives support from the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation .
