Place publique (PP for short; German  “public place” or in the figurative sense “public”) is a left, ecological and pro-European party in France.

history

Place publique was founded in November 2018 on the initiative of the journalist Raphaël Glucksmann , the economist Thomas Porcher , the environmental activist Claire Nouvian and the Alsatian local politician Jo Spiegel (Mayor of Kingersheim ; former PS member) and 18 other founding members. The party's self-declared goal is "a democratic, solidarity-based and ecological Europe". It is intended to bring together the political left in France and thereby represent an alternative to La France insoumise .

Half of the 22 founding members, including Porcher, left the movement in the run-up to the European elections. Among other things, they complained about the party’s strong hierarchy, which had degenerated into a “fan club for Raphaël Glucksmann” and criticized the cooperation with the PS . Porcher himself described the party as a "list of apparatchiks , not citizens".

For the European elections in May 2019 , Place publique entered the Envie d'Europe écologique et sociale list (“Desire for an ecological and social Europe”). There were also candidates from the Parti socialiste (PS), Parti radical de gauche (PRG) and the Nouvelle Donne party (a left-wing split from the PS). Glucksmann was their top candidate. The list received a total of 6.2% of the vote. Two members of Place publique - Raphaël Glucksmann and Aurore Lalucq (an economist and former member of Europe Écologie-Les Verts ) - were elected to the European Parliament.
