Sofia Sakorafa took part in the Olympic Games in 1976 and 1980 . Both times she did not succeed in qualifying. At the European Championships in 1978 , she missed the final by 42 centimeters with 56.76 meters as thirteenth of the qualification.

In 1981 Verouli and Sakorafa threw over 60 meters for the first time. At the European Championships in Athens in 1982, Antje Kempe from the GDR was in the lead with 67.94 meters until the fifth round . Then Anna Verouli achieved a new personal best with 70.02 meters. Sofia Sakorafa won the bronze medal with 67.04 meters. The two medals in the javelin throw were the only medals for the host country at these European championships.

Two and a half weeks after the European Championship final, Sofia Sakorafa set a new world record in Chania on Crete with 74.20 meters and exceeded the two-month-old world record of the Finn Tiina Lillak by 1.80 meters. In June 1983 Lillak took back the world record with 74.76 meters. Sofia Sakorafa had to cancel participation in the 1983 World Championships because of a shoulder injury. It was not until 1986 that Sakorafa competed again, but could no longer make it to the top of the world.

politics

Sakorafa hit the headlines again in the run-up to the 2004 Olympic Games . As a member of the city council of Maroussi , the suburb of Athens, in which the Olympic Stadium is located, she applied to be allowed to compete for Palestine. Ultimately, her plan failed because she did not meet the Olympic standard.

Sakorafa was a member of parliament in the cities of Athens and Maroussi . She entered the Greek Parliament three times for the PASOK party (2000, 2007 and 2009). In 2004 she was unable to win a mandate.

In 2010 she voted against the austerity plans and salary cuts that were part of the agreement between the Greek government, the International Monetary Fund and the EU. As a result, she was expelled from the PASOK party and from then on worked as an independent parliamentarian.

In the 2012 elections she then stood for the party SYRIZA - Enotiko Kinoniko Metopo and moved into the European Parliament for Syriza in 2014 .

In September 2015, Sakorafa left Syriza after disagreements with the Syriza leadership over the introduction of further austerity measures in Greece. She said, "It is clear that I cannot support a government or a policy that includes measures that harm people." In December 2018, she joined the Democracy in Europe 2025 party of former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis . In the Greek parliamentary elections on July 7, 2019, she and eight other MPs entered the Greek parliament with the party MeRa25.
