particularities Highest mountain in the Reisseck group

The Reißeck (also Great Reißeck ) is with its height of 2965  m above sea level. A. the highest elevation of the Reisseck group in the Hohe Tauern . The mountain is named for the mountain group and the southern municipality of Reißeck in the Carinthian Mölltal . To the northwest of the Reisseck, separated by the Mallnitzer Scharte ( 2673  m ), the Ankogel group connects with the Hochalmspitze .

The name Reißeck is based on an old water body name, such as Reisach "Fall-, Sturzbach", in Middle High German rîs "falling".

To the west and south of the summit are the reservoirs of the Reißeck-Kreuzeck power plant group . The Reißeckbahn built for the construction of the power plants is now also used for passenger traffic and is used almost exclusively for accessing the hut. The Reisseckhütte of the ÖGV is located in the immediate vicinity of the mountain station under the dam of the Great Mühldorfer See , as are two hotels and a small ski area.

Summit cross

The normal route leads over the Kalte-Herberg-Scharte and the south ridge to the summit without difficulty , but requires absolute surefootedness . Starting points are the Reißeckhütte or the uncultivated Neue Mooshütte . To the east-northeast of the Großer Reisseck lies the Kleine Reisseck ( 2924  m ), the ridge crossing leads over steep grass, but is technically not difficult.
