The Great Mühldorfer See is a reservoir with a storage target of 2319  m above sea level. A. , which is located within the Ankogel group in the Austrian municipality of Mühldorf . It has a storage volume of 7.8 hm³ and is located in the catchment area of the Mühldorfer Bach .

The originally natural Karsee ( 2284  m ) was enlarged from 1954 to 1957 by the construction of a 46.5 m high gravity dam with a 432.7 m long, slightly curved crown. From the start of operation, the Große Mühldorfer See served as the largest of a total of four annual storage facilities of the formerly independent power plant group Reißeck-Kreuzeck (level Reißeck annual storage, 67.5 MW). Since 2016 he acts as the upper ceiling for the newly constructed pumped storage power plant Reißeck II (430 MW) within the newly created power plant group Malta Reißeck the composite Hydro Power , a consortium of power plant group Malta and Reißeck-Kreuzeck . For this purpose, the lake was emptied in 2013 in order to upgrade the dam with regard to the changed management.

With the start of public transport on the company's own Reißeck-Höhenbahn from 1965 to 2014, which together with the Reißeckbahn led directly to the dam, the area around the Great Mühldorfer See was opened up for tourism. In addition, the Reißeckhütte ( 2287  m ) is an alpine club hut near the dam.
