Herbert Gantschacher (born December 2, 1956 in Waiern near Feldkirchen in Carinthia ) is an Austrian author, theater director and producer.

education

In 1976 Herbert Gantschacher graduated from the second federal high school in Klagenfurt . He then trained as a director from 1977 to 1980 at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz (today University of Music and Performing Arts Graz ). Gantschacher graduated with a diploma with distinction in 1980 and received a Magister Artium (Master of Arts) in 1988 .

Artistic activities

Gantschacher worked for the Schauspielhaus Graz , the Salzburg State Theater , the Tyrolean State Theater Innsbruck , the Donaufestival Krems , the Vienna Chamber Opera , the Theater an der Winkelwiese in Zurich , the Festival Musica Iudaica in Prague , the Kulturbrauerei in Berlin , the Festival Theater without Borders in Szczecin , the National Theater in Pristina , the National Arts Center in Ottawa , the Concordia University in Montréal , the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC , the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust , the “musica suprimata” festival in Sibiu / Hermannstadt and Cluj-Napoca / Klausenburg, the Felicja Blumental International Music Festival in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the annual Singapore Arts Festival .

In Dresden Gantschacher worked for the Staatsschauspiel Dresden , the small scene of the Semperoper , in the Dresden Center for Contemporary Music and in the Festspielhaus Hellerau .

He also worked for several institutions in Stockholm . Gantschacher worked there for the Kulturhuset and the Royal Opera (Kungliga Operan).

Otherwise Gantschacher still worked in the cities of Erfurt , Odessa , Saint Petersburg , Helsinki and Bergen , where he also gave lectures.

In December 2010 Gantschacher criticized in the essay There you are wrong! Concerning the Carinthian culture prize distribution, the Carinthian artists' fear of reality and their collaboration with the ruling power, but especially the lack of solidarity with the weakest in society.

Gantschacher is currently the artistic director of VISUAL , the European & International Festival of Visual Theater with deaf and hearing theater professionals in Vienna and Austria. He is also the artistic director of the theater and research project Krieg ist daDa , for which he has curated several exhibition projects :

Other activities

From 1980 to 1981 Gantschacher was a guest lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz (today University of Music and Performing Arts Graz ) and also held a seminar on Goethe's Faust poems , his students also included theater and Opera director and artistic director Martin Kušej . In 1999 Gantschacher was visiting lecturer at the Institute for Theater Studies at the University of Bergen in Norway , in 1999, 2000 and 2016 at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. In 2018, Gantschacher and Zvi Semel curated the master class project "Schule der Form" at the JAMD - Jerusalem Academy for Music and Dance for the composer Viktor Ullmann and the one-armed war-disabled pianist Paul Wittgenstein with master classes in singing (Therese Lindquist), violin and chamber music (Annelie Gahl ) as well as composition in classical and jazz (Wolfgang Pillinger)

Gantschacher has also acted as a lecturer and leader at a large number of symposia and conferences, most recently in 2003 in Vienna at the international conference The Unifying of Cultures in the Vienna International Center (conference center) and from 2004 to 2008 and 2014 to 2019 at the symposia and conferences on World War I theme in Villach , Nötsch , Arnoldstein (Austria), Prague (Czech Republic), Kingisepp , Saint Petersburg (Russia), Kobarid , Bovec , Lepena (Slovenia), Cividale , Redipuglia , Spilimbergo , Venice (Italy).

As part of his research and research activities, Gantschacher acquired the Digital Wilhelm Jerusalem Archive in 2018, eighty years after its destruction as part of the commemorative and commemorative year "Austria 1918–2018" in digital form for the Department of Manuscripts at the National Archives of the State of Israel in the National Library restored at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem . Also in 2018 he created the Digital Arnold Schönberg Archive for the House, Court and State Archives , in which all existing documents on the composer Arnold Schönberg and his military service in the First World War from 1914 to 1918 are digitally recorded and thus information on the biography of Complete composers.

From 1994 to 1999 Gantschacher was a member of the Carinthian cultural committee , the cultural advisory board of the state of Carinthia. In September 2013, by resolution of the Carinthian provincial government chaired by Governor Peter Kaiser from September 24, 2013, he was reappointed to the Carinthian cultural committee until 2018 and was also chairman of the advisory board for the performing arts of the province of Carinthia from 2013 to 2014. Gantschacher also worked as a radio play director for Austrian radio . He has also been a columnist for the Kleine Zeitung , Austria's second largest daily newspaper, since 2015.

  • Maecenas Prize 1994 for the Kar project , in cooperation with the Austrian Draukraftwerke AG .
  • Maecenas Prize 2002 for the theater traps project in the Vienna subway .
  • European seal 2002 for innovative language projects.
  • Maecenas Prize 2003 for the Dada project in tram line 1 & tram line 2 .
  • Nomination for the Bank Austria Art Prize 2012.
  • UNESCO Prize for the Visual Theater Library for "Developing Human Rights for All"
  • Arteco Prize for his project Different Trains , in which three operas were performed on a moving train across Europe at stations in Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Austria.
  • Cerec-Award of the Financial Times .
