Marie Heurtin

Marie Heurtin (born April 13, 1885 in Vertou , Département Loire-inférieure , † July 22, 1921 ) was a deaf-blind French woman . As one of the first deafblind people alongside Laura Bridgman and Helen Keller , she discovered the language.

Life

Marie Heurtin was born in Vertou in 1885 as the daughter of a cooper . Already from birth and even before language acquisition she was deaf and blind.

At the age of 10, her father took her to the Larnay Institute near Poitiers . During the first two months, Heurtin was constantly agitated by the unfamiliar surroundings. It was only through Marguerite, a sister of the institution, that she could be taught. Through her sister, Heurtin learned sign language , finger alphabet and finally Braille . She was also taught to write on a typewriter and to sew and knit. In 1921 she died of pneumonia at the age of 36.

Her life was filmed in 2014 by Jean-Pierre Améris . The main role of Marie Heurtin took on Ariana Rivoire .
