The Theater an der Winkelwiese in Zurich is a small theater in the basement of the Villa Tobler built by Gustav Albert Wegmann . It has been known for avant-garde theater productions since the 1960s and is known as the "center for contemporary drama in Switzerland."

history

The architect Jakob Zweifel opened the self-financed theater for the actress and director Maria von Ostfelden , who fled from National Socialism and who had appeared with unconventional theater productions at alternative venues since the 1950s. In April 1964, Doubt rented the basement, and in June the theater opened with Harold Pinter's The Caretaker .

Abstract stage sets, masquerading in both classic and modern dramas and collage-like incidental music by Yehoshua Lakner shaped the style. Until 1970, the stage saw itself as a counterpoint to the aesthetics of the productions in the Schauspielhaus Zurich , which was also noticed by international critics . It has shared this resolution with the Theater am Neumarkt Zurich since 1966 .

activities

Today the Theater an der Winkelwiese is one of the city-subsidized theaters. It does not have its own ensemble and shows its own productions (around 6 productions per season) in en-suite operations .
