Katja Brunner (* 1991 in Zurich ) is a Swiss author .

Life

Katja Brunner is the daughter of the Chief Public Prosecutor Andreas Brunner . She attended the Rämibühl literary school in Zurich until she graduated in 2009 and studied literary writing at the Swiss Institute for Literature in Biel (a department at the Bern University of the Arts ) and scenic writing at the Berlin University of the Arts .

At the age of 18 she wrote the play “Von den Beinen zu Kurz” about sexual abuse from the perspective of the victim, which premiered on March 31, 2012 at the Theater an der Winkelwiese as part of the “Dramenprozessor” author's project at the Zurich Theater an der Winkelwiese has been. The German premiere followed on January 5, 2013 at the State Theater in Hanover. The Hanoverian production became the 2013 Mülheim theater festival «Pieces. Mülheimer Theatertage » , at which Katja Brunner was awarded the renowned Mülheim Dramatist Prize for the play . She is therefore the youngest recipient in the history of the award. In 2013 she was voted Young Dramatist of the Year by the jury of critics for the trade journal Theater heute . In the same year she was nominated for the Heidelberger Stückemarkt with “Hell is just a sauna” . Her debut piece "Von den Beinen zu Kurz" was translated into Spanish, among other things, and is successfully played in Buenos Aires , Argentina . In 2014, “Change the physical state of your grief” premiered at the Lucerne Theater, directed by Marco Štorman. In the following year there was the premiere of “ghosts are also only people”, a commissioned work for the Lucerne theater “about the dependent, fully cared for existence, the last phase of a long life”. In Die Hand is a lonely hunter , which premiered in 2019 at the Volksbühne Berlin, Katja Brunner addresses "Assaults, self-hatred and the compulsion to self-optimization".

Katja Brunner also appeared in public as a performer, among others with Salome Schneebeli and Ivna Žic at the Theaterhaus Gessnerallee in Zurich, with Nils Amadeus Lange in the performance Die Kotze on the hot tin roof at the Zurich Theater Spektakel and with her group Die Schinken von tomorrow .

She also regularly publishes texts in literary magazines and newspapers. During the 2014/15 theater season, Brunner was a resident author at the Lucerne Theater and had her own late night show. She lives in Zurich and Berlin.

In February 2018, Katja Brunner was awarded the CHF 30,000 prize of the Culture Prize of the Zurich Government Council for her work.
