The Theaterhaus Gessnerallee is a theater in Zurich . It is located near the confluence of the Schanzengraben in the Sihl in Zurich's district 1 old town .

history

The provisional facility, which was created at the end of 1986 from former military buildings (arsenals, riding arenas, stables), was officially decided by the city council in 1988 as the "Kulturinsel Gessnerallee" and opened in 1989. Hildegard Kraus, Christoph Meury, Ruedi Schärer and Jürg Woodtli took over the management.

The situation remained uncertain due to various restrictions due to unclear ownership and monument protection regulations, until the conversion into a permanent establishment was made possible in 1993 after a referendum won . From 1995 to 1996 a partial renovation took place with the conversion of individual parts of the building.

1997/98 Armin Kerber and Jean Grädel took over the management. They also established the Theaterhaus Gessnerallee as a co-production partner for independent groups, medium-sized stages and festivals. From 1998 on, the Theaterhaus Gessnerallee took over the annual performance of the Hope and Glory festival for young talent in coproduction with the Theater am Neumarkt . In 2004 the event was organized on its own for the first time. In 2005 Niels Ewerbeck (1962–2012) took over the management of the theater; On January 1, 2012, he moved to the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt am Main . His place was taken by Roger Merguin , who came from the steam center in Bern .

Game operation

The theater in the listed large riding hall including stables sees itself as a symbol of the independent theater and dance industry in Switzerland. It pursues an interdisciplinary concept of theater that not only realizes dance and music theater projects on the Zurich and Swiss scene, but is also open to international guest performances at festivals and thematic focuses. Various directors such as Nicolas Stemann and Christoph Frick offered early productions at the Theaterhaus Gessnerallee.

In addition to the almost daily program on the stages, the “Reithalle” restaurant and the “Stall6” as a theater foyer and bar form further components of the Gessnerallee cultural island with regular club events, parties and concerts.
