biography

education

Ewerbeck was born as the youngest of five children of pediatrician Hans Ewerbeck and his wife Karen (née Bleicken). He spent his school days in Cologne and Le Chambon-sur-Lignon , which he completed in 1981 with a bilingual Abitur (German-French) in Cologne. In addition, from 1979 to 1981 he received specialist training with a focus on the flute at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne , which led him to a 2nd prize in flute playing at the 1981 youth music competition in Hamburg.

From 1985 he studied art history (main subject), Romance studies and classical archeology at the universities of Cologne , Siena and Vienna . In addition, Ewerbeck did a commercial art trade apprenticeship from 1985 to 1989 at the Cologne art auction house van Ham . From 1987 to 1989 he completed a postgraduate course in cultural management at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, which he completed in 1990 with a Magister Artium at the University of Cologne.

Act

From 1988 to 1991 Ewerbeck assisted in the organization, production and conception of exhibitions for the Museum of Modern Art (MUMOK) and the Wiener Festwochen, among others . In 1991 he started his own business in Vienna as an art dealer with the “Galerie Niels Ewerbeck” and showed, among other things, a highly acclaimed exhibition by Via Lewandowsky “… and built a city out of mushrooms”. In November 1993 he held an expert talk on the subject of “The future of the avant-garde gallery” (approaches to determining the function and redefinition of an aging institution). In the same year he closed his gallery for economic reasons. In interviews, he emphasized that his interest at this time turned more and more to performative art.

In 1994 Ewerbeck moved to Berlin , where he worked at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz . Among other things, he worked as an assistant director in Felix Prader's production of Yasmina Reza's successful piece “ Art ”. In 1996 he took over the management of press and public relations for the Theater der Welt event in Dresden . In the following years Ewerbeck worked for Nele Hertling at the Hebbel Theater in Berlin , among other things in public relations and in dramaturgy. He acted as production manager for Jochen Gerz 's spectacular production of “Berlin Investigation”.

In 1999, Ernest Martin handed over the management of the Young Theater in the old town to Ewerbeck. In the same year he was also the founding director of the Forum Free Theater (FFT) in Düsseldorf , which was newly formed from the Kammerspiele Düsseldorf and the Junge Theater in the old town without its own ensemble. It showed modern theater, musicals, cabaret and cabaret and developed the FFT into a regional center for the independent theater scene, in which interdisciplinary projects could also be established.

From 2004 to the end of 2011 Ewerbeck was the artistic director of the Gessnerallee theater in Zurich . Here he showed (co-) productions by independent dance, music and theater groups and individual artists in around 350 performances a year, some with key themes. In 2007/08, I imagine… Das Imaginäre als Provokation, a project series in collaboration with the Siemens Arts Program and the Institute for Theory (ith) at the Zurich University of the Arts , was shown in Gessnerallee . He was active as a university lecturer (master's lecturer in the theater department) at the Bern University of the Arts .

At the beginning of 2012, he took over the management of the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt am Main, succeeding Dieter Buroch . Ewerbeck closed the house for eight months in order to fundamentally rebuild the theater hall from the 1980s and to widen the stage space. An elaborately staged three-day LÜFTEN festival in and around the Jahrhunderthalle in June 2012 , which was supposed to combine music, modern dance theater and artistic interventions as a new format, was of high artistic quality, but had few visitors and left a considerable deficit. The reopening of the house after the renovation took place on September 6, 2012 with the performance of the piece Before Your Very Eyes by Gob Squad .

Ewerbeck was found dead in his apartment on October 2, 2012. Suicide can be assumed.
