Van Ham art auctions

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

VAN HAM Kunstauktionen is a German art auction house based in Cologne .

history

In 1959, the art historian Carola van Ham founded the auction house "Kunsthaus am Museum" as the first woman auctioneer in Europe. The focus of the house at this time was on European arts and crafts and paintings. The art historian Werner Stopp built up the painting department of the house, which at the time focused on painting of the 19th century.

In 1996, Carola van Ham-Eisenbeis handed over the management of the company to her son Markus Eisenbeis. Markus Eisenbeis transformed the auction house into an internationally competitive company. In 1999 the company moved to larger premises in the Bayenthal district . At the same time the name of the company was changed: The "Kunsthaus am Museum, Carola van Ham" has been operating under the name "VAN HAM Art Auctions" since autumn 1999.

In the summer of 2014, VAN HAM moved to a new building in Raderthal . In the building there is a 300 square meter auction room with a ceiling height of seven meters and a surrounding gallery.

Markus Eisenbeis was appointed as a publicly appointed and sworn auctioneer for art and antiques by the Cologne Chamber of Commerce and Industry and is vice-president of the Federal Association of German Art Auctioneers

activity

Together with Lempertz , Ketterer Kunst , Karl & Faber and Villa Grisebach , the auction house is one of the leading auction houses in Germany and has another focus on modern and contemporary art. A breakthrough came in 2001 when the painting The Dentist by Gerard Dou was called up in Cologne. The wooden panel was exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1900 and auctioned off by the Berlin art dealer Paul Cassirer in 1923 . From 1929 the painting was in a private collection in the Middle Rhine region. At Van Ham, Der Zahnarzt achieved a result of 5.7 million DM , making it the most expensive painting at a German auction.

VAN HAM conducts around eighteen face-to-face auctions and twenty online auctions annually, which are divided into the themes of modern and contemporary art , ancient art , European applied arts , Asian art and jewelry and watches and are accompanied by illustrated and online catalogs and previews. VAN HAM has all objects from 1,000 euros checked for theft and looted art using the art loss register .

In addition to its main office in Cologne, the auction house has representative offices in Munich , Hamburg , Luxembourg , the Netherlands and Belgium .
