Robert Fleck (born July 3, 1957 in Vienna ) is an Austrian art historian and exhibition curator . From 2008 to 2012 he was director of the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn .

Career

Fleck grew up in Vienna in a house next to the Muehl commune. His family was acquainted with Otto Muehl . From 1962 to 1967 he attended the Lycée Français de Vienne and then the public high school of the Theresian Academy Foundation , which he graduated with the Matura in 1975.

From 1976 to 1977 he studied art history, history, geography and sports at the University of Vienna and from 1977 to 1981 at the University of Innsbruck art history, history and philosophy. From 1978 to 1981 he worked at the Galerie next St. Stephan and other Viennese avant-garde galleries. He then went to Paris and studied at the Universities of Paris I-Sorbonne and Paris VIII-Saint-Denis and the Collège de France with Gilles Deleuze , Jean Baudrillard and Michel Foucault , among others , aesthetics, philosophy and history. With a topic on the history of democracy at the University of Innsbruck he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD.

Act

Fleck lived in France until 2003. He has been working as a freelance art author since 1982. From 1991 to 1999 he was, among other things, France correspondent for the art magazine art , from 1991 to 1993 Austrian federal curator for fine arts and in 1998 co-curator of the 2nd European Biennale for Contemporary Art Manifesta in Luxembourg (with Maria Lind and Barbara Vanderlinden ). From 2000 to 2003 he was director of the ERBAN-Ecole Régionale des Beaux-Arts de Nantes , the art school in Nantes . Before that, he headed the postgraduate program there from 1998 to 1999 .

In 2004 Robert Fleck was appointed director of the Deichtorhallen - House of Photography and Current Art in Hamburg , which, with around 6000 m², is one of the largest exhibition spaces for temporary exhibitions of contemporary art in Germany. Fleck's concern was to involve the population more closely in the exhibitions and thus attract new groups of visitors. The Deichtorplatz , located between the halls, was increasingly used for outdoor presentations. He wanted to enter into a dialogue with various social groups in the city by sending “ambassadors” from the Deichtorhallen to other parts of the city.

In the large Deichtorhalle, Fleck showed extensive monographic exhibitions on 4,000 m², among others by Jiri Dokoupil , Michel Majerus , Jonathan Meese , Hans Haacke , Erwin Wurm , Georg Baselitz , Fischli & Weiss , Stephan Balkenhol . In the Haus der Photographie , the small Deichtorhalle, there were exhibitions on various historical and current positions in the medium of photography .

In 2008 Fleck was appointed as the successor to Wenzel Jacob as director of the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn. Fleck came under fire nationwide because he only exhibited works from the collection of the collector Hans Grothe in a retrospective by Anselm Kiefer . It was presumed that Fleck Grothe thereby helped to increase the market value of these works. Fleck left the Kunsthalle on October 1, 2012. Since then he has been professor for “Art and the Public” at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and head of the Academy Gallery in Düsseldorf. Fleck is currently Vice Rector at the Düsseldorf Art Academy (as of 2020). As a curator, Fleck was involved in the preparation of the exhibition Imagine tomorrow (a comparison between Hundertwasser and Schiele , February-August 2020) at the Leopold Museum in Vienna .
