Order of the Two Sicilies

The Order of the Two Sicilies ( Ordine delle due Sicilie ) was founded in three classes on February 24, 1808 by Joseph Bonaparte , King of Naples . The purpose of the foundation was to reward those who had proven themselves in the regeneration of the state. The King of Naples was a grand master .

The order was awarded until 1860.

Order classes

Persons from noble houses with an honorary decoration became non-countable members of the order. A decree of October 28 of the year of the foundation established the admission of archbishops and bishops. In the oath of allegiance to the king, they were accepted as commander (archbishop) or as knight (bishop).

Order decoration

The medal was a five-pointed, gold-rimmed red star, which was surmounted by a golden eagle with a royal crown. In the medallion the coat of arms of Naples with the jumping horse could be seen on the obverse . All around the words PRO RENOVATA PATRIA (the renewed fatherland). The reverse showed the coat of arms of Sicily and the words JOS all around . NAPOLEON SIC. REX INSTITUIT (donated by Joseph Napoleon, King of the Two Sicilies).

Ribbon and way of wearing

The silk ribbon was light blue. It was placed from the right shoulder to the left hip. The additional breast star was worn on the left side of the chest. Commanders wore the medal as a neck medal and the third class, i.e. the knights, wore the buttonhole on the left.
