The Steiner Alps or Kamniker Alps ( Slovene Kamniške Alpe , also Sanntaler or Sulzbacher Alps , Slov. Savinjske Alpe , or in summary: Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe ) are a mountain group in the Southern Limestone Alps . They are upstream of the Karawanken between the Save and Savinja rivers to the south. They are named after the town of Kamnik (Eng. Stein in Oberkrain ), which lies in the valley of the Kamniška Bistrica (Eng. Feistritz ).

The Austrian - Slovenian border runs across the Steiner Alps , the greater part is Slovenian territory.

Historically, the borders between the former duchies of Carinthia , Carniola and Styria ran on the Ursulaberg (Uršlja Gora) .

Geographical classification

The Steiner Alps are roughly divided into three parts:

  • Storžič group in the west (with the peaks Storžič , 2132  m and Tolsti Vrh , 1715  m )
  • Grintovec group in the middle: The main ridge of the Steiner Alps extends from west to east and lies entirely in Slovenia. Starting in the west at the Kokra valley, the Jezerska Kočna quickly reaches an altitude of 2540  m . The next peak is already Grintovec , at 2558  m the highest point in the Steiner Alps. The peaks further east are the Skuta ( 2532  m ), the Krainer and Carinthian Rinka (Kranjska Rinka, 2453  m , and Koroška Rinka, 2433  m ), Turska Gora ( 2251  m ) and the Brana ( 2253  m ). To the east of the Steiner Saddle (Kamniško sedlo, 1903  m ) are the Planjava ( 2394  m ) and the Ojstrica ( 2350  m ), with which the series of striking limestone peaks come to an end.
  • the karst plateaus in the east: Velika Planina, Dleskovška Planota, Menina Planina, Dobroveljska Planota and Golte (with the peaks Veliki Rogatec ( 1557  m ), Kranjska Reber ( 1435  m ), Velika Raduha ( 2062  m ))

Rivers in the Steiner Alps are the Tržiška Bistrica , the Kokra , the Kamniška Bistrica (all three are tributaries of the Save ) and the Savinja , which rises above the Logar Valley, and the Dreta , a tributary of the Savinja . The Kokra River separates the Grintovec Group from the Storžič Group.

To the east of the Steiner Alps lies the mountainous region of Celje (dt. Cilli ), cut through by the Dravinja (dt. Drann ) and rich in mineral springs . To the northwest, the Vellachtal forms the border with the Karawanken and Karawanken foothills .

Tourism and transport

On the main ridge of the Steiner Alps: Skuta (right) and Grintovec (left, back)

In addition to the mountains with numerous, mostly demanding hiking trails and some via ferrata, the approximately 90-meter-high Rinkafall ( Slap Rinka ) in the Logar Valley Landscape Park ( Logarska dolina ) is a popular excursion destination. The Krvavec ski area is located in the south of the Steiner Alps .

On the Carinthian side, there is spa tourism in the Vellachtal ; here is the Vellacher Kotschna nature reserve .

The Jezerski Vrh (Eng. Seebergsattel ) forms a transition between Carinthia and Upper Carniola, another transition between Carinthia and the Slovenian region of Štajerska is the Pavličevo Sedlo (Eng. Paulitschsattel ) .

The Velika Planina is a strong tourist attraction .
